  • Strong GCSE Results 2024

    Published 22/08/24

Students at William Farr Church of England Comprehensive celebrated another strong year of GCSE results with a quarter of all grades awarded at grade 7 and above.

Three-quarters of students (74%) achieved at least 5 grades 9 to 4 including English and Maths.

In English and Maths, 77% of students achieved a grade 4 or above in both subjects.

Headteacher Jonathan Knowler said: “I am very proud of the students. They have worked extremely hard and shown remarkable commitment and resilience over the last two years. We should not forget that these students had disruption to their education in Year 7 and 8 through Covid. Results have now returned to our 2019 pre- Covid levels and we are looking forward to another high Progress 8 score for the school.

“It was great to see them celebrating their success and progressing to their next steps. The results are testament to the dedication of staff to ensure our students realise their potential.

“It demonstrates how the school community has come together to provide opportunities for all its members to engage with 'life in all its fullness' (John 10:10).”

Among the top performers (highest average point scores) were:

Lola Bibby (seven grade 9s, two grade 8s)
Anaia Belcher (five grade 9s, four grade 8s)
Ben Payne (four grade 9s, five grade 8s)
Madeleine Stelfox (four grade 9s, five grade 8s)
Sam Delaney (four grade 9s, three grade 8s, two grade 7s)
Leanne Oborne (four grade 9s, two grade 8s, two grade 7s, one grade 6)
Ruby Dawson (one grade 9, six grade 8s and two grade 7s)
Hayley Lancastle (four grade 9s, two grade 8s, one grade 7 and two grade 6s)

    Fantastic A-Level Results 2024

Students and staff celebrated our highest A-Level attainment rates in public exams, discounting the impact of Covid years, when results were announced today.

With a pass rate of 99.7%, William Farr celebrated its best-ever attainment since the A-Level reform, leading to an average grade of a ‘B’.

Almost a quarter of all grades awarded were A*/A and over half of all grades were A*-B. The percentage of A*-A and A*-B grades increased above 2023 levels.

92% of students were offered University places at either their firm or insurance choice.

Two students have received offers from Cambridge University to study Languages and History respectively. Two students have received offers to study Medicine and one student Veterinary Medicine.

Headteacher Jonathan Knowler described the results as “incredible”.

“The school has achieved its highest average points score per entry (36.5) – above 2023 and the
    pre-pandemic years”, Mr Knowler said.

“This cohort were the first to sit GCSE examinations following the pandemic and had disruption to their secondary education. Their GCSE grades were adjusted nationally to take into account the impact of Covid so were inflated compared to pre-pandemic results. Given press reports, we had, therefore, expected A-Level grades to drop, but this has not been the case at William Farr.

We must pay tribute to this cohort of students, whose results are testimony to their hard work, commitment and resolve.

“I’d like to thank the staff who have worked so hard in supporting our students to achieve such a terrific set of outcomes.

“Our focus is not just on those students wanting to progress into higher education.

“Other progression routes will see students successfully pursue work-related training, apprenticeships in a variety of fields, and personal development opportunities through a gap year.”

Students with Exceptional Performance - highest average points per entry include:

    Ross Stelfox                          3 x A* (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) + A in EPQ

Zed Smith                             3 x A* (Art, English Language and Literature, History) + A in EPQ

    Benson Wu                           2 x A*, 1 x A (Geography, Mathematics, Business Studies) + A* in EPQ

    Joshua Turner-Beadle         1 x A*, 2 x A (History, Politics, Religious Studies) + A* in EPQ

    Niamh Sutherland               2 x A*, 1 x B (History, Sociology, English Literature) + A* in EPQ

    Herm Butcher                      1 x A*, 2 x A (History, French, Mathematics) + A* in EPQ

    Yaman Nashawi                   1 x A*, 2 x A (Psychology, Biology, Chemistry) + A in EPQ

    Mackenzie Dickinson          1 x A*, 2 x A (Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics) + A in EPQ

  • Award recognises outstanding teaching

    Published 15/11/23

Top class teaching at a Welton school has been rewarded with a prestigious educational award.

William Farr Church of England Comprehensive School has been awarded The Prince’s Teaching Institute (PTI) Subject Leadership Programme Mark for outstanding teaching in English.

Headteacher Jonathan Knowler said: “We are delighted to have been awarded The PTI Mark for our English department’s innovative work.

“My congratulations to them. They have delivered consistently outstanding results, and this prestigious national recognition is richly deserved.

“We will be proud to carry the Mark on our website as evidence of our commitment to inspirational teaching.”

The PTI supports teachers at all stages of their career by delivering a wide range of professional development courses.

The registered charity launched the Subject Leadership Programme in 2007 to recognise and reward school departments that develop inspirational ideas and activities regardless of pupils’ backgrounds or abilities.

The PTI’s Subject Leadership Programme is open to all state secondary schools in England.

To achieve the PTI Mark, departments have to demonstrate that they have increased the challenge within their subject curriculum, developed their staff’s specialist subject knowledge, developed subject-based links outside school and enthused their pupils through subject-based activities beyond the curriculum.

After three years of Subject Leadership Programme membership, departments may choose to join the Research Programme by devising an advanced multi-year programme in one of these areas.

As Research Programme members they will share their growing expertise with others in the Subject Leadership Programme to the benefit of all.

In addition to the PTI Subject Leadership Mark, the English department is thrilled to have been nominated for a special Bernice McCabe Award.

This award promotes and celebrates excellence in subject leadership, recognising departments that put quality subject teaching at the heart of the classroom.

Bernice McCabe OBE, who sadly passed away in 2019, was the founding Co-Director of the PTI and believed in the transformative power of inspiring subject teaching.
